Smile

Illegal immigration takes its toll on communities

By BOSTON HERALD EDITORIAL STAFF

PUBLISHED: June 14, 2019 at 12:00 am | UPDATED: June 14, 2019 at 6:53 a

While many immigrants who come here illegally are simply looking for better lives for themselves and their families, the consequences for legal citizens are often deleterious.

Illegal immigration has a devastating impact on low-wage workers whose employers give them their jobs.

Illegal immigrants use billions of dollars of health services each year, supplemented with revenues from state and federal taxes.

Of course, living as an illegal immigrant in the United States virtually requires one to commit several crimes, anything from identity theft to fraud, but illegal immigration often brings far more serious offenses. According to the Department of Justice, out of the 183,058 inmates in Bureau of Prisons custody, 38,132 (21%) were reported as known or suspected aliens. In Texas alone, 251,000 criminal aliens have been booked into local jails between June 1, 2011, and April 30, 2018. Of the 663,000 criminal offenses they were charged with, 1,351 were homicides and 7,156 were sexual assaults.

Illegal immigration affects different states in different ways, including right here in the Bay State, where, according to a Pew Research Center report, the illegal migrant population grew more in Massachusetts than any other state from 2007 to 2017 — a 60,000 spike that costs Massachusetts taxpayers and risks public safety.

As the Herald’s Rick Sobey reports, legal immigration advocates are sounding the alarm.

“Besides the cost to taxpayers, there are public safety implications when you fail to control illegal immigration,” said Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies. “And the continuing high levels of illegal immigrants undermine the integrity of our legal immigration system.”

Illegal immigrants annually cost Massachusetts taxpayers an estimated $2 billion for welfare, education and other costs — a price that will only rise as the illegal immigrant population goes up, she said.

“They’re a net fiscal drain because they don’t pay enough in taxes to cover the cost of the social services they use,” Vaughan said. “So the more illegal immigrants, the higher costs to taxpayers.”

It is possible to both have compassion for illegal migrants and insist that our laws are followed. In fact, lawful compliance is compassionate, as legal immigration comes with little risk to the immigrant or the United States and is usually very fruitful for both.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper: Ocasio-Cortez’s claim that US runs ‘concentration camps’ is absurd and insulting

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s claim Monday and Tuesday that the U.S. government “is running concentration camps on our southern border” is obscene, shockingly ignorant, and an insult to the memory of the 6 million Jews and millions of others murdered by the Nazis.
The comparison is also a terrible insult to the dedicated men and women in U.S. law enforcement agencies enforcing our immigration laws, likening them to Nazi mass murderers and war criminals.

Beware of Leftists' Intention

Mike Huckabee June 17, 2019

This is a terrific article from the Orange County Register, looking at the Grand Canyon-sized gap between the so-called “good intentions” of progressive “social justice” policies and the quality of life of the people they claim to be helping.  The results are anything but “just” and offer more proof of why "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you" is considered one of the biggest lies of all time.

We’ve all observed how government policies in the most liberal cities have led to widespread crime and violence, filth, disease, unemployment, homelessness and scarcity of affordable housing, all heavily impacting the poor and middle class (what’s left of it, anyway.)  But this piece looks even deeper into the numbers to show why so many minorities are fleeing places where “social justice” leftists run the show for cities and states in the South and Midwest that those same leftists haughtily condemn and boycott -- but where everyone, including their own black and Hispanic ex-pats, lives better lives.

This goes into some details as to why that is.  For instance, the obsession with “climate change” drives up the costs of gas and electricity, which kills job creation while putting a huge burden on working class families.  Heavy environmental regulation blocks construction, which kills blue collar jobs while making housing scarce and expensive.  The further left the politicians, the more they rail about “income inequality”…but the further left the government, the worse income inequality is (California has the worst in America, while San Francisco has practically reverted to a feudal system of lords living in castles and impoverished serfs taking refuge in caves.)

Despite claims that liberal cities are more friendly to minorities, most of their minority populations are shrinking as they flee L.A., San Francisco, New York and Chicago for “non-woke” cities like Dallas or Phoenix, where they have a better chance of attaining the American dream.  For instance, in Los Angeles, only 37% of Latinos and 33% of African-Americans own their own homes.  In "unenlightened" Houston, those numbers are 51% and 42% respectively.

Read the whole thing, and if you’re a young person who still believes there’s a connection between how much someone virtue-signals and how much actual virtue they have, then read it twice.  And again, on behalf of the residents of those cities to which the refugees from leftism are fleeing, I convey this message: ““You are welcome here, but please don’t vote to bring the same garbage you fled (and we mean “garbage” both figuratively and literally) to the places you fled to.”

=====

“You are welcome here, but please don’t vote to bring the same garbage you fled (and we mean “garbage” both figuratively and literally) to the places you fled to.”

Group Upset Over Increase In Homeless Population To Seek Mayoral Recall

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — An effort to recall Mayor Eric Garcetti is set to kick off this morning.
A group of residents upset over the increase in the city’s homeless population plan to formally begin their drive with a press conference announcing the filing of a formal notice of intention with the city clerk. In order to have the effort certified, the group will need to collect nearly 315,000 signatures from registered Los Angeles voters.

"This city has become a death camp for the homeless." After investigative reports by NBCLA revealing the homelessness epidemic, typhus, and rodent problem, official moves are under way to recall Mayor Eric Garcetti. John Cádiz Klemack reports for the NBC4 News at 6 p.m. Monday, June 17, 2019. (Published Tuesday, June 18, 2019)

A group of registered voters delivered a letter of intent to Mayor Eric Garcetti, calling Los Angeles a death camp for the homeless, and saying they want Garcetti out for his ineffectual handling of the homelessness crisis

The group said NBCLA's coverage of the homelessness epidemic, along with the NBCLA I-Team's coverage of the rodent problem and growing typhus cases, have opened their eyes.

"I'm just an Angeleno trying to make it in the big city and I think this city is breaking people," said Alexandra Datig, one of the petitioners pushing for a recall on Mayor Garcetti.

More than 7,000 people and counting have provided electronic signatures toward a symbolic recall request online at Change.org.

As Democrats debate reparations for slavery, polls suggest Americans are not convinced

As Democrats consider the idea of reparations to black Americans for slavery, polling indicates that the public is far from convinced about the idea.
House Judiciary Democrats on Wednesday were holding a hearing in the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties subcommittee on H.R. 40 -- a proposal by Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, D-Texas, to set up a commission to study and develop a response to the question of reparations for slavery.

But polling suggests that such a commission would also need to change the minds of a significant number of Americans for the move to get support.
A Fox News poll in April found that 60 percent of Americans oppose paying cash reparations to descendants of slaves, while just 32 percent support it. A Rasmussen pollin the same month found that just 21 percent of likely voters think taxpayers should pay reparations to black Americans who can prove they are descended from slaves.

However, in a finding that could put 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls in a bind, the Fox poll found that among Democratic primary voters, 54 percent said they were likely to support a candidate who backed reparations, while 33 percent said they were not likely.

....

The 13th amendment, which formally abolished slavery in the United States, passed the Senate on April 8, 1864, and the House on January 31, 1865. On February 1, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln approved the Joint Resolution of Congress submitting the proposed amendment to the state legislatures.

En France: Slavery was first abolished by the French Republic in 1794, but Napoleon revoked that decree in 1802. In 1815, the Republic abolished the slave trade but the decree did not come into effect until 1826. France re-abolished slavery in her colonies in1848 with a general and unconditional emancipation.

To the Editor:
I would argue that reparations for the present generation of any minority would not heal but rather exacerbate feelings of resentment and distrust between racial groups. The process of deciding who deserves reparations would bring such rancor and consume so much of our national conversation that the current issues that torment us would not receive adequate attention.
If reparations were given to some, others would argue that they too have suffered and would demand their piece of the redemption pie. We, as a nation, have put into place the kinds of efforts that make sense to make inroads against our sins of the past. We are not perfect, but we have made progress and will continue to do so.

NEWS RELEASE 17-JUN-2019
Climate change had significant impact on Amazon communities before arrival of Europeans
UNIVERSITY OF EXETER

Climate change had a significant impact on people living in the Amazon rainforest before the arrival of Europeans and the loss of many indigenous groups, a new study shows.

Major shifts in temperature and rainfall caused the disappearance of communities long before 1492, researchers have found. In contrast other cultures still flourished just before the Spanish colonisation of the Americas.

New analysis of what the climate was like in the Amazon from 700 to 1300 shows the changing weather led to the end of communities who farmed intensively, and had a strong class structure. Those who lived without political hierarchy, who grew a greater variety of crops, and took more care to look after the land so it remained fertile, were able to adapt and were less affected.

During this period the Amazon was home to dozens of sophisticated communities who lived in flourishing towns and villages. Conflict between these communities, and migration, also contributed to the downfall of some.

Dr Jonas Gregorio de Souza, who led the research while at the University of Exeter and is now based at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, said: "Some Amazon communities were in decline or had changed drastically before 1492. Our research shows climate change was one of the responsible factors, but some groups survived because they had been working with their natural environment rather than against it. Those who farmed intensively, and had more pressure to produce surplus food because of a strong class structure, were less able to cope."

It is thought the population of indigenous communities declined by 90 per cent to 95 per cent after Europeans came to Amazonia due to epidemics and violence. Before this up to 10 million people had lived in Amazonia, and this loss reshaped landscapes and cultural geographies across the region.

Experts analysed the climate in ancient Amazonia through analysis of pollen and charcoal remains, sediments from lakes and stalagmites. This allowed them to track how much rainfall there was in the region from year-to-year. They also analysed archaeological remains showing crops grown by communities in the past, and the structures they lived in.

In the Eastern Amazon the Marajoara elite lived on large mounds, which each could have been home to around 2,000 people. These chiefdoms disintegrated after 1200. It had been thought this was due to the arrival of Aruã nomadic foragers, but the study suggests decreasing rainfall also played a part. Communities used the mounds to manage water, with the rich monopolising resources. This made them sensitive to prolonged droughts.

At the same time Santarém culture, established in around 1100, was flourishing. They grew a variety of crops - maize, sweet potato, squash - and worked to enrich the forest. This meant drier conditions had less impact.

Experts have found communities in the Amazon built canals to manage seasonal floods. In the southern Amazon people fortified their ditches, walled plazas, causeways and roads as the climate became more volatile.

Professor Jose Iriarte, from the University of Exeter, said: "This study adds to the growing evidence that the millennium preceding the European encounter was a period of long-distance migrations, conflict, disintegration of complex societies and social re-organisation across lowland South America. It shows the weather had a real impact."

The research, part of the Pre-Columbian Amazon-Scale Transformations project, funded by the European Research Council, was carried out by academics at the University of Exeter, Pennsylvania State University, Baylor University, Universität Bern, Universidade de São Paulo, Instituto Geofísico del Peru, Northumbria University, Universidade Federal do Pará, French National Centre for Scientific Research, The University of Utah, University of Reading, Reading and the Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Climate change and cultural resilience in late pre-Columbian Amazonia is published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution.

Mysterious freshwater reservoir found hidden beneath the ocean

By Christopher Carbone | Fox News

Scientists have found a gigantic freshwater aquifer hidden deep below the ocean.

The surprising discovery, from a new survey of the sub-seafloor off the northeast U.S. coast by researchers from Columbia University, appears to to be the largest formation of this type anywhere in the world — stretching from Massachusetts to New Jersey and extending continuously out about 50 miles to the edge of the continental shelf.

Climate change is a hoax

To the editor:

We are told global warming is “settled science.” Those who reject that idea are “deniers.” But as new evidence trickles out from peer-reviewed science studies, the legs beneath the climate change hypothesis are collapsing. Consider:

Dec. 12, 2007 BBC headline fiction: “Arctic Summers Ice-free by 2013.”

Sept. 7, 2013 NASA fact: Arctic Ice Cap had grown by 533,000 square miles or 29 percent.

In 2013 The Mail in London reported: “...global warming has paused since 1997.”
Sept. 19, 2017 NASA: “Antarctic sea ice coverage had been increasing, overall, between 1979 and 2015.”

Sept. 18, 2017 The Telegraph: “Climate change poses less of an immediate threat to the planet than previously thought because scientists got their modeling wrong, a new study has found.” (Lied on purpose to push their globalist masters agenda.)

National Geographic July 31, 2009: “Scientists are now seeing signals that the Sahara desert and surrounding regions are greening due to increasing rainfall ... If sustained, these rains could revitalize drought-ravaged regions, reclaiming them for farming communities ... This desert-shrinking trend is supported by climate models, which predict a return to conditions that turned the Sahara into a lush savanna some 12,000 years ago.”

Investors Business Daily Feb. 10, 2015 exposed what the real agenda is behind this fabricated crises: “At a news conference last week in Brussels, Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of U.N.’s Framework Convention on Climate Change, admitted that the goal of environmental activists is not to save the world from ecological calamity but to destroy capitalism.” Doubt that? Study the “Green Deal” proposed by Congresswoman Ocasio Cortez, and Democratic Presidential Candidates Kamala Harris and Corey Booker. The average person, of course, truly believes they are saving the planet.

Climate change alarmists need to take a deep breath, exhale some carbon dioxide and focus on who is behind perpetrating this gargantuan hoax.

Climate correction: when scientists get it wrong

On November 1, AFP joined news outlets around the world in covering the release of a major academic paper warning that our oceans were warming dramatically quicker than previously thought.

The study was undertaken by some of the world's most pre-eminent climate scientists, using state-of-the-art modelling systems reviewed by their peers, and appeared in one of the most prestigious academic journals.

There was just one problem: it was wrong.

Published in Nature, the paper by researchers from the University of California San Diego and Princeton found that oceantemperatures had warmed 60 percent more than current estimates.

They concluded, with no small sense of alarm, that even the most ambitious emissions cuts laid out in the global plan to prevent climate disaster would need to be slashed again by another 25 percent.

Soon after publication, an independent climate scientist—one who has repeatedly voiced scepticism of the consensus that human behaviour is causing global warming—spotted an error in the Nature paper's maths.

"After correction, the... results do not suggest a larger increase in ocean heat content than previously thought," Nicolas Lewis wrote on his Climate Science blog.

"Just a few hours of analysis and calculations was sufficient to uncover apparently serious (but surely inadvertent) errors in the underlying calculations.

ADVERTISEMENT CHINAPublished 12 hours ago Trump says he's optimistic about trade deal with Chinese President Xi, in interview with Tucker Carlson

President Trump told Tucker Carlson in an exclusive interview he is optimistic about a possible trade deal between his administration and Chinese President Xi Jinping, a potential development that sent the stock market futures soaring toward record highs early Monday.

Trump sat down with the Fox News Channel host during the president's trip which included stops in Osaka, Japan, for the G20 summit, and a first-of-its kind visit by a U.S. president to North Korea, meeting with dictator Kim Jong Un at the demilitarized zone (DMZ). The interview is set to air Monday night at 8 p.m. ET.

The Dow futures jumped nearly 300 points heading into Monday morning's open, and the index was poised to begin the day around 50 points higher than the highest closing on record of 26,828.39, set on Oct. 3, 2018. A deal with China to reduce tariffs and cool off the trade war between the world's two biggest economies appeared to be the main driver, and President Trump told Carlson he was hopeful about striking a trade agreement with Xi.
