Sen. Kelly Loeffler Dumped Millions in Stock After Coronavirus Briefing
Sen. Kelly Loeffler is the second senator who has gotten rid of their holdings right as the stock market went bad.

The Senate’s newest member sold off seven figures’ worth of stock holdings in the days and weeks after a private, all-senators meeting on the novel coronavirus that subsequently hammered U.S. equities.
Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) reported the first sale of stock jointly owned by her and her husband on Jan. 24, the very day that her committee, the Senate Health Committee, hosted a private, all-senators briefing from administration officials, including the CDC director and Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, on the coronavirus.
...
It was the first of 29 stock transactions that Loeffler and her husband made through mid-February, all but two of which were sales. One of Loeffler’s two purchases was stock worth between $100,000 and $250,000 in Citrix, a technology company that offers teleworking software and which has seen a small bump in its stock price since Loeffler bought in as a result of coronavirus-induced market turmoil.

...
Loeffler’s office did not respond to a request for comment from The Daily Beast on the transactions and whether they were prompted or informed by information shared at that late January briefing. It’s illegal for members of Congress to trade on non-public information gleaned through their official duties.
Late Thursday night, she did offer a statement, tweeting: “This is a ridiculous and baseless attack. I do not make investment decisions for my portfolio. Investment decisions are made by multiple third-party advisors without my or my husband’s knowledge or involvement.
“As confirmed in the periodic transaction report to Senate Ethics, I was informed of these purchases and sales on February 16, 2020—three weeks after they were made,

After mocking Trump for promoting hydroxychloroquine, journalists acknowledge it might treat coronavirus

By Gregg Re | Fox News
After repeatedly mocking President Trump for suggesting on March 19 that hydroxychloroquine could be an effective treatment for coronavirus, media organizations have begun acknowledging that the drug -- now approved for emergency use to treat coronavirus by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) -- may be useful after all.

Journalists and top Democrats have beaten a similarly hasty retreat from their previous claims that Trump's ban on travel from China was both xenophobic and ineffective. But media outlets' misinformation on hydroxychloroquine was unique because it involved not simply policy disagreements but also suggestive medical advice and directives that could have dissuaded some from seeking certain treatments.
.."Malaria Drug Helps Virus Patients Improve, in Small Study," The New York Times reported this week, adding: "A group of moderately ill people were given hydroxychloroquine, which appeared to ease their symptoms quickly, but more research is needed."
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, went from threatening doctors who prescribed the drug with "administrative action" to requesting that the federal government ship her state some. Other state leaders have followed suit, including Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak, also a Democrat.
It wasn't always considered acceptable to use that kind of optimistic rhetoric, however.
"Trump peddles unsubstantiated hope in dark times," read a March 20 "analysis" by CNN's Stephen Collinson. Saying Trump was "adopting the audacity of false hope" and embracing "premature optimism," Collinson charged that "there's no doubt he overhyped the immediate prospects for the drug" because the FDA refused to give a timeline on approving the drug to treat coronavirus.
"Trump is giving people false hope of coronavirus cures. It’s all snake oil," read one Washington Post headline. Added the Post's editorial board: "Trump is spreading false hope for a virus cure -- and that’s not the only damage."
."The most promising answer to the pandemic will be a vaccine, and researchers are racing to develop one," the paper insisted, although it is not staffed with medical experts. "Mr. Trump’s inappropriate hype has already led to hoarding of hydroxychloroquine and diverted supplies from people with other maladies who need it. His comments are raising false hopes. Rather than roll the dice on an unproven therapy, let’s deposit our trust in the scientists."
USA Today's editorial board was similarly aggressive and mocking, writing, "Coronavirus treatment: Dr. Donald Trump peddles snake oil and false hope."

Accidental origin of vaccines explained: Why humans may have cows to thank
By Matt London

...
It all started with a Scottish country doctor named Edward Jenner in the late 1790s, explained Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security.

Jenner discovered that milkmaids were seemingly immune to smallpox, which is an infectious disease that regularly ravaged populations in The United Kingdom and around the world.
"At that time there was nothing called vaccination," said Adalja. "There was something called variolation, which was a variation of vaccination. But it really involved taking the actual material of smallpox and scratching it into your skin so that you would get a mild case and be protected from a severe case."

Dr. Jenner realized variolations for smallpox were ineffective for the milkmaids because they had already developed an immunity to smallpox through their exposure to cowpox.
"He really took that and developed what was the first vaccine," said Adalja. "In essence, what a vaccine does is it takes some part or some portion of whatever you want to vaccinate against and gives it to your body."

"Your immune system sees that substance and then develops antibodies or these specialized proteins that can bind to the target and allow that to be cleared from your body and basically render you impervious for the most part to some of these pathogens."
The French biologist and chemist, Louis Pasteur took Jenner's discovery an enormous step forward several decades later with the creation of a rabies vaccine for humans.
"[Pasteur] really cemented this idea that you could find an organism that you wanted to vaccinate against, make a vaccine against it and that problem would no longer be something that haunted humanity," noted Adalja.

In a nod to the advances made by Jenner, Pasteur named this newly created medical technology vaccination.

"The word vaccine actually comes from the Latin word for cow," said Adalja, "In honor of Jenner, Louis Pasteur named the technology, vaccination, even though the rabies vaccine had nothing to do with the cow or cowpox."

"From smallpox to polio to pneumonia-causing bacteria to influenza to yellow fever, there are so many vaccines that make our life so much better," concluded Adalja. "You can really just look at civilization and measure what the impact of vaccines have been in terms of lifespan, in terms of infant mortality, in terms of child mortality. And I think that they really have to be thought of as one of the greatest technological advances."

To learn more from Dr. Adalja, including his thoughts on the potential promise of a COVID-19 vaccine and persistent myths about vaccines, go to Fox Nation and watch "Fox Nation 101: Making Vaccines."

You can also learn more from the "Fox Nation 101" series by watching "Pandemics and Epidemics 101," with Dr. Nicole Saphier, who is a full-time practicing physician at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a Fox News contributor.

On December 10, 2009, the CDC reported an estimated 50 million Americans or 1 in 6 people had been infected with the 2009 A H1N1 Virus and 10,000 Americans had died, by which time the vaccine was beginning to be widely distributed to the general public by several states.

FLASHBACK: Obama Played Golf the Same Day His Administration Declared H1N1 a Public Health Emergency BY MATMARGOLIS

Despite Trump’s decisive actions early in the coronavirus outbreak (which experts agree saved lives) there seems to be a coordinated effort by the left and the media to undermine Trump during the crisis, and perpetuate the false narrative that the Trump administration is botching the response and that Trump is not taking the outbreak seriously.
It’s strikingly different from what happened during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, when the media was determined to present Barack Obama glowingly, especially in the middle of a recession. In retrospect, it seems the media was determined to prevent widespread panic, even as the H1N1 virus spread, and Obama faced criticism for failing to take common-sense measures to slow down the spread. When the pandemic was over, in the United States alone there were over 60 million cases of H1N1, 274,304 hospitalizations, and 12,469 deaths due to H1N1. Not once during the pandemic did Obama impose any travel bans. Schools didn’t shut down en masse, your favorite sports leagues didn’t cancel their seasons, concerts weren’t postponed, bars and restaurants weren’t shut down. In retrospect, the Obama administration didn’t take the threat seriously enough to make the tough decisions to reduce the rate of infection, and the media didn’t make it their cause to undermine him and create panic. In fact, they did the exact opposite. Here’s what the New York Times reported at the time:

Mr. Obama added, “We want to ensure that in the worst-case scenario, we can manage the situation appropriately.”

The president’s comments came at the end of a weeklong balancing act in which his public words and actions were carefully measured to summon a sense of urgency without setting off a panic. It was no coincidence, his aides said, that he played golf the day his administration declared a national emergency. And there were behind-the-scenes worries about whether he would be ridiculed for using a presidential news conference to urge people to wash their hands.

Can you imagine if President Trump played golf right after declaring a national emergency? Do you think if he had, the New York Times would have credited him with trying not to set off a panic? Obviously they wouldn’t. But Obama could do no wrong, even though at the end of the pandemic there were over 12,000 dead. As of March 15, the CDC reports there are 1,629 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the United States and 41 deaths.

Sad

Britain joins growing chorus of countries furious with China's faulty coronavirus equipment

By Barnini Chakraborty

Britain has become the latest country to cry foul about the quality of China's coronavirus test kits and equipment after the ones the country purchased were deemed too unreliable.
Since the outbreak began, China has been accused of multiple cover-ups and deliberately lying about its coronavirus infection and death rates. Beijing has tried to rebrand itself on the international stage as a leader in tackling the virus but the drumbeat of complaints has been getting louder in recent days and the faulty kits, delivered to the likes of Britain, Spain and the Netherlands, is only exacerbating the problem.
In a blog post on Monday, John Bell, the coordinator of coronavirus testing for Public Health England, said that none of England's 17 million antibody kits -- including the ones bought from China -- have performed well.
"We see many false negatives and we also see false positives," he wrote. "...This is not a good result for test suppliers or for us."
He added that the antibody tests bought had only able to identify immunity accurately in people who had been severely ill. The antibody tests will be crucial in helping essential workers get back to work.
Ideally, the finger-prick tests would be able to confirm who had already built up immunity to COVID-19 and perhaps let them leave lockdown and return to work.

Dems block McConnell bid to swiftly approve $250B more for small business fund

A $250 billion urgent request to shore up a depleting small business fund failed to pass the Senate Thursday after Democrats objected to the measure pushed by the White House and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
With lawmakers home and social distancing, McConnell sought to pass the cash infusion swiftly Thursday by unanimous consent with a skeleton group of senators, but Democrats blocked the effort because they want add-ons to help businesses in disadvantaged communities and an additional $250 billion in funds for other priorities.

The Tenth Amendment (Amendment X) to the United States Constitution, which is part of the Bill of Rights, was ratified on December 15, 1791. It expresses the principle of federalism and states' rights, which strictly supports the entire plan of the original Constitution for the United States of America, by stating that the federal government possesses only those powers delegated to it by the United States Constitution; all remaining powers are reserved for the states or the people.

Trump is eager to reopen the US economy by presidential fiat, potentially as early as 1 May. At a chaotic, angry and rambling White House briefing on Monday night, he claimed: “When somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total.

Constitutional scholars and state governors alike were quick to reject the idea the federal government could force states to reopen, with Cuomo leading the charge...
