Howard Kurtz: 'Media frenzy' wrongfully blaming Trump for shootings reveals their rhetorical 'irony'

Media commentators who have been quick to blame President Trump for recent mass shootings are engaging in the same rhetoric they claim to despise, according to Howard Kurtz.
The suspects in both the Dayton and El Paso shootings are deranged individuals whose actions do not reflect upon the politicians they may support, Kurtz said Tuesday on "The Story."
"There is a massive difference between criticizing President Trump for his sometimes divisive language -- that's fair game -- and coming out and saying the president wants mass violence," he said.
"He is outright accused as if it was an undisputed fact of being a racist, of being a white supremacist... Here's the irony, that some of these commentators are allowing their own very intense anger toward Donald Trump to lead them into the kind of inflammatory rhetoric that they accuse him of spreading.
"These shootings have produced an absolute media frenzy."
Earlier, host Martha MacCallum played clips of media personalities slamming Trump in the aftermath of the tragedies.
"He is inciting hatred, inciting violence," MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski claimed in one clip, adding Trump, "seems to want these things to happen."
In another clip, commentator Kirsten Powers characterized the president as, "the arsonist coming and saying that he wants to help put out the fire."
On "The Story," Kurtz added the media appears to have ignored the reported political leanings of the Dayton shooter, though reiterating it would be ridiculous to blame politicians of any party for the actions of madmen.
"The Dayton shooter supposedly said he would happily vote for Elizabeth Warren," the "MediaBuzz" host said.
"So, is it Elizabeth Warren's fault he killed people in Ohio? Of course not."
Kurtz added Alexandria, Va. congressional baseball practice shooter James Hodgkinson's apparent support for Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., similarly does not mean blame should be placed on the 2020 presidential hopeful.
He added, in turn, the media tries to practice, "guilt by association" when it comes to Trump.

A controversial movie about privileged vacationers hunting “deplorables” for sport is ruffling feathers more than a month before its scheduled release and after tragic mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.
“The Hunt” is billed as a satire that follows wealthy thrill-seekers taking a private jet to a five-star resort where they embark on a “deeply rewarding” expedition that involves hunting down and killing designated humans. The Hollywood Reporter reported on Tuesday that “Universal is re-evaluating its strategy for the certain-to-be-controversial satire" following the shootings after ESPN reportedly pulled a trailer for the film that had been previously cleared to air on the sports network.
“The violent, R-rated film from producer Jason Blum's Blumhouse follows a dozen MAGA types who wake up in a clearing and realize they are being stalked for sport by elite liberals,” THR’s Kim Masters wrote. “It features guns blazing along with other ultra-violent killings as the elites pick off their prey.”
According to the Hollywood trade publication, characters in the film refer to the victims as “deplorables,” which is what Hillary Clinton famously dubbed Trump supporters during the 2016 election. The report noted that a character asks, "Did anyone see what our ratf--ker-in-chief just did?"
"At least The Hunt's coming up. Nothing better than going out to the Manor and slaughtering a dozen deplorables," a character responds, according to THR.
"Out of sensitivity to the attention on the country’s recent shooting tragedies, Universal Pictures and the filmmakers of The Hunt have temporarily paused its marketing campaign and are reviewing materials as we move forward," a Universal Pictures spokesperson told Fox News late Wednesday.
DePauw University professor and media critic Jeffrey McCall told Fox News that the movie is “harmful to a culture that surely needs messages of unity and understanding” during the current climate.
“It says something sad about the state of the ‘entertainment’ industry that this movie ever got conceived and produced. Hollywood clearly thinks it is OK to stereotype so-called deplorables and set them up for a hunt,” McCall said. “Thank heavens some sensible outlets are pulling the promotional ads.”
“The Hunt” stars Betty Gilpin and Hillary Swank, who play characters who represent “opposite sides of the political divide,” according to Masters, who added that it was originally titled, “Red State vs. Blue State.”
Political satirist Tim Young makes a living by poking fun at topical issues but thinks “The Hunt” goes over the line.
“Why would anyone think it's a great idea to have a movie about hunting down someone who doesn't agree with them politically? It's remarkable to me that the left blames Donald Trump's rhetoric for violence, then literally spends millions to normalize the killing of people based on politics,” Young told Fox News.
“We're told over and over again by the left, especially in Hollywood, that this country is more divided than ever and we need to come together... is this what they mean by it? Come together to murder your neighbors that you don't agree with? This film is sick and shows just how hateful the left has become,” Young added.
ESPN did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
At least two trailers for the film are online but it remains unclear if Blumhouse Productions will proceed with other planned advertisements.
“A high-level insider says top executives want to stand by Blum, one of the studio's most prolific and successful producers, as well as filmmaker Craig Zobel, and see the project as a satire addressing an issue of great social importance. But this person says plans could change ‘if people think we're being exploitative rather than opinionated,’” Masters wrote.
“This certainly shows Hollywood for what it really is -- demented and evil. At a time when journalists try to blame President Trump for every act of violence in the world, wannabe Tinseltown terrorists are making sick murder fantasies about right-wingers,” Media Research Center vice president Dan Gainor told Fox News.
A trailer that was published by The Daily Mail reveals that the victims are from areas that typically vote Republican, while a hunter declares “We pay for everything, so this country belongs to us.”
“While some trailers for the film have been pulled, there's an internal debate deliberating the film's next steps,” Daily Mail’s Lauren Edmonds wrote. “But decisions will need to come fast, as there's a promotional blitz planned in September.”
“The Hunt” is scheduled to be released on Sept. 27.
“The executives at Universal and those even willing to promote this or run ads for it should know better than to promote political violence,” Young said.

The manifesto written by accused El Paso mass killer Patrick Crusius is the basis for the argument that the shootings were inspired by President Trump. Media commentators, Democratic presidential candidates, and all types of Trump critics have made that case in the days since the murders.
Much discussion was spurred by an article in the New York Times with the headline, "El Paso Shooting Suspect's Manifesto Echoes Trump's Language." The story quoted just 28 words of the nearly 2,400-word manifesto. It noted that Crusius specifically wrote that his views "predate Trump." And it warned that "linking political speech, however heated, to the specific acts of ruthless mass killers is a fraught exercise." Nevertheless, the Times declared that even "if Mr. Trump did not originally inspire the gunman, he has brought into the mainstream polarizing ideas and people once consigned to the fringes of American society."
Democratic contender Beto O'Rourke, an El Paso native, was much more blunt. "22 people in my hometown are dead after an act of terror inspired by your racism," O'Rourke tweeted to the president.
So what did Crusius actually write? The Times story did not link to the manifesto, nor did many other media accounts. Most news organizations decided that even though the manifesto is clearly part of the El Paso story, they should not give Crusius the exposure he sought by linking to its full text. So many stories have included just a few snippets from the document. (The Washington Examiner has also decided not to link to the manifesto, but it can be easily found on the internet.)
But since the manifesto has become such an important part of the moment's political debate, it is worth looking at the whole thing. And the impression one gets after reading the manifesto is quite different than some press accounts.

Part of it discussed commonly debated issues such as the environment and the economy in ways that are well within the boundaries of political conversation going on today — indeed, that might have come out of the New York Times or many other outlets. Other parts of it mixed in theories on immigration from far right circles in Europe and the U.S. Then it threw in beliefs on "race-mixing" straight from the fever swamps.
And then it concluded that the solution is to murder Hispanic immigrants, going on to debate whether an AK-47 or an AR-15 would best do the job. By that point, Crusius had veered far from both reality and basic humanity.
But the question is, was he inspired by President Trump? It is hard to make that case looking at the manifesto in its entirety.
Crusius worried about many things, if the manifesto is any indication. He certainly worried about immigration, but also about automation. About job losses. About a universal basic income. Oil drilling. Urban sprawl. Watersheds. Plastic waste. Paper waste. A blue Texas. College debt. Recycling. Healthcare. Sustainability. And more. Large portions of the manifesto simply could not be more un-Trumpian.

Biden, 76, mistakenly referred to the shootings as “the tragic events in Houston today and also in Michigan the day before," but later corrected himself, according to a pool report. Biden seemingly confused Houston for El Paso and Michigan for Ohio when speaking to donors about the shootings.
Such mistakes are not unique to any one candidate. President Trump, for instance, on Monday misstated the location of one of the mass shootings that rocked the nation over the weekend – referring to Toledo instead of Dayton – during a speech in which he condemned the "monstrous evil" that left at least 30 dead. *
For his part, Biden has had other mixups on the campaign trail. In May, Biden confused former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who left office in 1990, with then-Prime Minister Theresa May.

Bill Maher finds ally in NBC News' Richard Engel in 'hoping' US economy slides to oust Trump

NBC News correspondent Richard Engel was the lone voice to side with "Real Time" host Bill Maher on Friday night, after the comedian reiterated his "hopes" that a U.S. economic recession would help block President Trump's reelection in 2020.
"Short-term pain might be better than long-term destruction of the Constitution," Engel argued.*
None of the other members of Maher's panel wanted to see the U.S. stumble.
"I'm not wishing for a recession," Tom Nichols, author of "The Death of Expertise," said.
"Neither am I," Washington Post columnist Catherine Rampell agreed.
But Maher -- a multimillionaire whose investments include a stake in MLB's New York Mets-- tried to make the case that economic hardship for the nation might help him and other liberals realize their dream of preventing a second Trump term.
"You should wish for a recession because that would definitely get [Trump] unelected," Maher shot back, earning him a few claps from his Los Angeles studio audience.
Another guest, former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci, attempted to lower the temperature of the conversation.
"You don't really want a recession," Scaramucci tried to convince Maher.
"I really do," the host replied. "We have survived many recessions, we can't survive another Donald Trump term."
Last week, Maher had revived his stance that a recession would be "worth it" because it would hurt Trump's reelection.

NBC News correspondent Richard Engel was the lone voice to side with "Real Time" host Bill Maher on Friday night, after the comedian reiterated his "hopes" that a U.S. economic recession would help block President Trump's reelection in 2020.
"Short-term pain might be better than long-term destruction of the Constitution," Engel argued.*
None of the other members of Maher's panel wanted to see the U.S. stumble.
"I'm not wishing for a recession," Tom Nichols, author of "The Death of Expertise," said.
"Neither am I," Washington Post columnist Catherine Rampell agreed.
But Maher -- a multimillionaire whose investments include a stake in MLB's New York Mets-- tried to make the case that economic hardship for the nation might help him and other liberals realize their dream of preventing a second Trump term.
"You should wish for a recession because that would definitely get [Trump] unelected," Maher shot back, earning him a few claps from his Los Angeles studio audience.
Another guest, former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci, attempted to lower the temperature of the conversation.
"You don't really want a recession," Scaramucci tried to convince Maher.
"I really do," the host replied. "We have survived many recessions, we can't survive another Donald Trump term."
Last week, Maher had revived his stance that a recession would be "worth it" because it would hurt Trump's reelection.

J'ai lu vos six dernier billets et consulté les liens joints. Il me vient des réactions au dépoté :
- d'abord les gagateries supposées de Joe le Palucheur me semblent très secondaires en portée que l'âge des protagonistes à la course à l'échalote n° 46 est invraisemblable pour une jeune Nation comme celle des E-U d'Amérique : pour 2020 Ze Donuts 74 balais, Le Palucheur 77 et Nerby La Ponceuse 78 ! L'on se croirait à une nomination au Comité central du parti communiste soviétique en son temps, un aréopage de vieillards rhumatisants des genoux et passablement du neurone... Le Palucheur causait à une Foire annuelle - un truc que j'appellerais plutôt une kermesse - une manifestation lors de laquelle l'on ne suce pas de glaçons, hormis ceux de son verre de whiskey.
- si dans leur programme des opposants à 46 souhaitent une récession qui aurait pour conséquence de plonger les citoyens dans la mouise il faut absolument les bannir des affaires publiques, ce sont des fous dangereux. Moi ce qui me file le blues et la stouffia c'est de devoir subir, à chaque fois que l'on parle en France de cette traînée de Charles le Fou chantant, le fait que l'on glorifie une sorte de héros national intemporel des arts à la francaouie, lui qui fut pourtant connu comme danseur étoile des ballets bleus, sans jamais avoir été inquiété bien que mis en cause... Bleu est une belle couleur, mais parfois elle cache des choses et des pratiques ignobles dont il n'y a pas lieu d'être fiers.
